Uniting Generations of Jazz Musicians
WDNA’s JAZZ ENCOUNTERS continue on the third Friday of April with composer and saxophonist TROY ROBERTS, Friday, April 15, 2011 at 8 pm.
Jazz Encounters celebrate America’s classical music, create awareness in the importance of music education, provide personal musical encounters between diverse individuals, and expose the audience to the rich talent in the next generation of musicians.
Young musicians are invited to play along some of the best musicians around, in an informal setting and with the common purpose of establishing a relationship around music and its history. It’s also a lot of fun! Be good at what you do and be ready to play!
Students under 21 years old with an instrument are admitted free. General admission is a $15 donation to WDNA. Concerts take place at the WDNAJAZZ GALLERY located at 2921 Coral Way in Miami. For more information, call (305) 662-8889. Sponsored by The Childrens Trust.

Jazzonian is very pleased to announce the grand opening of the South Florida Jazz Summit with an event to benefit the Jazz Musicians’ Fellowship Foundation featuring World renowned Jazz pianist from New York City Lenore Raphael. In addition, special guest performers include saxophonist Jesse Jones Jr. and violinist Federico Britos.
The Jazz Musicians’ Fellowship Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that seeks to help South Florida Jazz musicians who experience life or career threatening circumstances.
Born and raised in the Bronx, New York, Lenore started at the age of 3 by playing everything she heard by ear. Lenore studied classical piano with concert artist Beulah Eisenstadt. By the age of seven she was featured in recitals and performed at Carnegie Hall. Even then, she heard different things in the classical music she was playing and started embellishing and improvising on Mozart, Chopin, etc.
A native of Miami, Florida, Jones managed to capture the pure essence of Jazz as a child while listening and playing along with recordings of the legendary saxophonist “Cannonball” Adderley. This experience and many years of unwavering dedication to the art of Jazz have served to transform Jesse into one of the best Jazz instrumentalists in the South Florida area.
For over half of Century, Federico’s career has expanded through continents embarking on many voyages. Born in Uruguay, Federico Britos began playing violin at the age of five. His talents grew as such that he came to serve as principal chair, soloist, and ultimately, Concertmaster with some of the finest symphony orchestras of Uruguay, Venezuela, Peru, Cuba and South Florida. Federico has toured extensively throughout the Americas and Europe. As a composer, Federico has written and recorded many works for orchestras, chamber ensembles, ballet and dance, as well as composing works for TV and theater.

A young cellist heads for a big competition
Anna Maria Litvinenko, a 16-year-old junior in the New World School of the Arts high-school program, will be off to Moscow in mid-June to participate in the respected International Tchaikovsky Competition. The youngest of the 122 competing musicians, Litvinenko will go head to head (or bow to bow) with 24 other cellists as they aspire to stake a claim to the 300,000 Euros in prize money and the chance to secure international concert engagements with such respected ensembles as the London Symphony Orchestra and the Mariinsky Orchestra.
“Anna exemplifies the promise of our youth,” Jeffrey Hodgson, interim NWSA provost, said in a statement. “She is a driven and talented artist who is passionate about making beautiful music. This is an outstanding achievement at her young age.”
Litvinenko, who performed Dvorak’s Cello Concerto with the Miami Symphony Orchestra in 2009, was born into music. Her father is a music educator and cellist with Miami Symphony. Her mother, a pianist, studied at the Odessa Conservatory in Russia.
