Gypsy Road: 2008-1-19 at Mutineer (Wharf Lounge)

The Gipsy Road Band at Mutineer's Wharf Lounge.

Ana and I received good reports on The Gypsy Road Band so we drove off to Mutineer Restaurant's Wharf Lounge. We were treated to a tight, driving sound with excellent vocals doing classic rock, country and blues. Gypsy Road was formed in the late 90's as a stress reliever -- great idea as they share musical tastes, enjoy playing live and have been very active in the last three years playing at local venues in Miami-Dade and Broward. Above, from left to right, we see Roger Hurley on guitar and vocals, David Whiddon on bass guitar, Gabe Rodriguez on drums, Darrell Barney on lead vocals and keyboard, and Lane Kenworthy on guitar and vocals. Gypsy Road has a website at http://www.thegypsyroadband.com.

Gypsy Road's Darrell Barney on lead vocals and keyboard.

Darrell Barney's singing was consistently awesome. His skilled and tasteful keyboard playing was a welcomed bonus.

Roger Hurley on lead guitar and vocals.

As I photographed the band, Ana yelled "Look! Look! Turn around! Hurry!" so I turned to find Roger Hurley standing on a table next to ours, picking at his Fender Stratocaster, looking as though he belonged there. On stage, Roger stands next to the mixing board, so he may have been doing a sound check... Anyway, the dark blob at the lower left corner is Ana's head.

Gipsy Road's Lane Kenworthy on guitar and vocals.

Lane Kenworthy's guitar playing always fits, always enhances the band's sound --- very enjoyable!

David Whiddon on bass guitar.

David Whiddon's bass playing was in the pocket with great technique and timing. The bass looks like a Fender Jazz but is actually a Modulus.

Gypsy Road's Gabe Rodriguez on drums.

Gabe Rodriguez on drums. Plenty of soul, technique and timing and you can always count on him to give 100%.

The Gypsy Road Band banner.

At clubs, too often we've had no idea of the band's name and neither did the wait staff. Thank you, Gypsy Road, for this banner.
